After many years of history, the guifi.net community continues to evolve. One of the initiatives we have recently undertaken has been the renewal of the project’s main website, with the aim of explaining more clearly, more closely, and in a more contemporary way what guifi.net is and the values that inspire us.
The historic guifi.net homepage has accompanied us for many years and has served as the entry point for thousands of people, organizations, local operators, and volunteers who have helped the project grow. That website reflected the richness and complexity of a living project, collectively developed over more than two decades.
However, times change, and so do communication needs. Today, many people arrive at guifi.net without previously knowing what an open, free, and neutral network is, or what it means to manage telecommunications as a common good. We needed a new way to tell our story.
The new homepage is the result of this process of reflection and improvement. We have chosen a more visual, accessible, and engaging presentation that highlights the fundamental pillars of the project: social transformation, the commons network, the social and collaborative economy, and technological innovation in the service of people.
The new structure makes it easier to quickly understand what guifi.net is, what we can build together, and the impact that the community model has on the territory. It also provides easier access to the Foundation’s institutional information, the history of the project, and the different ways to participate.
This change is simply a natural evolution. We remain the same community that, since 2004, has been working to guarantee universal access to the Internet, promote alternatives to centralized models, and foster a local, collaborative, and sustainable economy. What has changed is the way we communicate these ideas so that we can reach more people using the tools and languages of today.
The renewal of the homepage is part of a broader set of improvements that we are developing to strengthen the visibility of the project, encourage the participation of new people, and consolidate guifi.net as an international reference in community-based telecommunications management.
